Strawberry Hill is a neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cambridge was founded in 1630 and is right across the Charles River from Boston. There are thirteen neighborhoods in Cambridge, and Strawberry Hill is the smallest. What it lacks in area, it makes up for in character and amenities.
Strawberry Hill is in the western section of Cambridge. It encompasses the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Municipal Golf Course. The northern border of the neighborhood runs right through Fresh Pond Reservation and along Huron Avenue. The Boston and Maine railroad tracks form the eastern border of the neighborhood, Mount Auburn Street the southern border, and the town of Belmont the western border.
Strawberry Hill has a mix of housing options. There are some apartment buildings, single-family homes, and condos, but the majority of the houses are for two or more families. This is a historic neighborhood and there is a mix of architectural styles. You can find Greek Revival-style homes that have been restored to their mid 19th century glory along with modern condos on the golf course.
Fresh Pond is the reservoir for the city of Cambridge and several others cities, as well. The Reservation has over 150 acres that surround the pond and include trails for walking, jogging, or biking. Dogs are allowed to go unleashed at the Fresh Pond Reservation, a great place to take Fido for some exercise. You can also have a picnic or do some serious bird watching. There is parking available.
Glacken Field is ideal for athletic activities. The Park includes a ball field, tennis courts, and children’s playground. The Thomas (Tip) P. O’Neill Jr. Municipal Golf Course takes advantage of its location adjacent to the Fresh Pond Reservation to provide a challenging nine holes of golf for those at all levels of proficiency.
Strawberry Hill has public bus service that connects it with the rest of Cambridge.
