Located just blocks from downtown Worcester and all that city life has to offer, the community of Green Island is a bustling place to live. The surrounding neighborhood is filled with many hot spots, such as the historic Hanover Theater for Performing Arts and the DCU Center arena.
Green Island is located in ZIP code 01610. Interstate 290 runs to the east and south of the neighborhood, and Worcester lies directly to the north.
Of the many appealing aspects of living in Green Island is the historic Hanover Theater for the Performing Arts. Built in 1904, the theater originally showed burlesque and Broadway shows, transitioning to airing silent films by 1912. In 1926, new owners doubled the size of the theater, creating seating for 3,500, and transformed the interior, adding elaborate additions such as mirrored walls and a giant chandelier. In 1927, after the refurbishing was complete, the theater began showing the newly released talking films. The facility was closed for a few years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but was reopened in 2008. Today, the theater seats 2,300 and welcomes Broadway tours, well-known entertainers, and local performing arts groups.
The DCU Center is an indoor arena and convention center that is home to the Worcester Sharks ice hockey team. The facility also hosts other sporting events, concerts, conventions, and trade shows.
Residents who enjoy playing their own sports appreciate Crompton Park, which is located within Green Island. This popular spot has a soccer field, a baseball diamond, tennis courts, a basketball court, a playground, and the Green Island Neighborhood Center.
