East Somerville Neighborhood
East Somerville is part of the city of Somerville, Mass., which is a Boston suburb. It borders on McGrath Highway to the west and is located between Washington Street to the south and Broadway to the north. East Somerville is one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the Boston area. If you are looking for a place to try a new ethnic restaurant, East Somerville is the place to come.
The claim to fame of East Somerville is that it was the location of a good part of Paul Revere’s historic ride. It is something of which the area is very proud. East Somerville was originally a part of Charlestown and developed early as a place for local farmers to graze their animals. Those days are long gone, and the current design of the area is more one of narrow streets with small city-style lots. Most people who live in the neighborhood are renters, but the neighborhood is in transition and a lot of the apartments are being turned into condos and sold.
Interstate 93 goes through the southwest section of the neighborhood, and a T stop is at the farthest southeast corner at Sullivan Square.
Glen Park is located where Oliver Street meets Glen Street. It is a beautiful park that was designed so that it is handicapped accessible, even in the playground area. The park has open space, two baseball/soccer fields, two basketball courts, and even a garden. It is a gem in the neighborhood. Glen Park is not dog-friendly, however, as no dogs are allowed.
The architecture of East Somerville is very interesting. It spans a variety of styles, which includes Queen Anne, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, and Italianate. A large historic area has homes dating from the second half of the 19th century. The streets are tree-lined, and there are sidewalks that make walking enjoyable.
