When the first explorers traveled the Penobscot River in the 1600s, it must have been an amazing sight – the towering forests, the wild river, the lush green hills. Surprisingly, it wasn’t until much later – the 1750s – that the British would finally settle the area. Bangor, Maine was the location of one of the worst American naval defeats of the Revolutionary War – the Penobscot Expedition.

Today, the riverbed is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and artifacts from that battle are still being discovered – such as scuttled ships under the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge in Bangor.

Present-day Bangor is just as awe-inspiring today as it was for the first explorers. The city is a vast collection of historical buildings, most dating back to the 19th century. Many sections of the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and include the Bangor Public Library, founded in 1830; the William Arnold House, built in 1856 and owned by author Stephen King; and the Thomas Hill Standpipe, built in 1897.

In addition to its great beauty and fascinating history, Bangor is a thriving city with several businesses. It is the economic hub for the area and is home to a major airport. Tourism, of course, is a huge industry – skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, resorts, lodges, and campgrounds are all popular. Visitors come year-round to enjoy the miles of ocean, unique activities such as snowshoeing, ice fishing, and dog sledding, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and snowboarding. There’s even great shopping and a casino to round out the fun.

When you rent an apartment in Bangor, you’ll enjoy amazing parks – such as the stunning Cascade Park, the City Forest and Boardwalk with more than nine miles of trails on 680 acres, and the Bangor Municipal Golf Course. The wildly beautiful Acadia National Park is nearby. This stunning park is one of the most-visited national parks in the country.
