Old Aurora is a neighborhood located in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is bordered by Holiday Drive to the west, General De Gaulle Drive to the south, Woodland Drive to the east and General Mey Avenue to the north. There are also rivers to the north and east that are within the neighborhood.
Most of the homes in the Aurora Gardens area are typical two-bedroom ranch homes that are relatively inexpensive. Like in other parts of New Orleans, some of the homes were built just after the Civil War. However, there is another major section of Old Aurora where the homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, so the dwellings in this area are quite a mix of styles representing different eras.
An interesting historical note on Old Aurora is that the Battle of New Orleans was fought on portions of the now-closed Aurora Academy. The Battle of New Orleans is also reflected in many of the schools that were named after Andrew Jackson, who led the American forces.
Another point of interest is that Old Aurora is actually located near a World War II museum and is located near a United States Naval Base. There are also museums that are dedicated to African-American history, as well as the history of the culture of greater New Orleans.
