To the south and up river from downtown New Orleans, Louisiana is the neighborhood of Irish Channel. It is along the Mississippi at the bottom of a great southern loop before continuing north downstream towards downtown where the river begins to loop to the south again. The mostly small homes in Irish Channel are situated right off the street except for a few places in the neighborhood’s western portion where there are semblances of front lawns.
The standout private school in the area is Ecole Bilingue De La Nouvelle – Orleans. It is a small private school (pre-kindergarten to grade 5,) with only 87 students, and it has a student to teacher ratio of 27:1. This school is rated at 4.5 stars by neighborhood parents.
The Commander’s Palace is housed in a turquoise and white historical building of Victorian architecture. The cuisine of this famous restaurant mixes modern New Orleans-style fare with Haute Creole. The New Orleans Times Picayune has rated this establishment as being in the top 10 in all of New Orleans.
Near the French Quarter, Harrah’s New Orleans is a casino that offers a variety of table games, including poker, baccarat, blackjack and roulette, and of course, the 2,100 popular slot machines.
The Steamboat Sanchez is New Orleans’ only steamboat. There are two “jazz cruises” to choose from. For daytime entertainment, there is the two-hour Harbor Jazz Cruise that begins in the French Quarter. By night, residents of the area and visitors can enjoy the Dinner Jazz Cruise.
