Bayou St. John, New Orleans is a neighborhood located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Bayou St. John is located to the south of Esplanade Avenue and to the north of Orleans Avenue. North Broad street is located to the east, while Carrollton Avenue is located to the west, forming a perfect rectangle.
Sieur de Bienville first traveled through Bayou St. John in 1699 on his way to Mississippi. It was an old Indian trail at the time, but he would one day become known as the Father of New Orleans, and this is where his journey began.
Andrew Jackson traveled through Bayou St. John leading up to the battle of New Orleans. This is commemorated by a road race that uses the route that Jackson took through Bayou St. John.
The Parkway Bakery and Tavern was established in 1922. It offers up one of the finest Po’ Boy sandwiches, which are native to New Orleans. The Po’ Boy has been considered either shorthand for “poor boy’s lunch” or from the French words pour boire which translate to “peace offering.”
When it comes to wealth distribution, the east and west sides of town contain the higher housing prices, while the middle of the town tends to be where the cheaper housing is located. A houses on the sides of town ranges in price from about $250,000 to $300,000, with homes in the center of town going for sometimes less than $100,000.
The main park in town is located in St. John’s Court, which contains playgrounds, picnic grounds, and additional green space.
