Imagine living in a neighborhood with the convenience of great schools and universities, restaurants and coffee shops, grocery stores, pharmacies, office supplies, and even a fine arts supply store. Upper Highlands, a peaceful yet vibrant neighborhood in Louisville, offers that and more. It’s bounded by Bardstown Road to the east, Watterson Expressway to the south, Newburg Road to the west and Dundee Road/Emerson Avenue to the north.
Bellarmine College lies a short distance to the south and Sullivan University to the east, just across Bardstown Road. Gardiner Lane Shopping Center is conveniently located off the freeway or expressway, as southerners call it. At the locally-owned coffee shop in Gardiner Lane, college students work quietly on their computers while older adults chat over a cup of coffee with their friends. Business meetings often take place at a restaurant in the same shopping center.
For the traveler living in Upper Highlands, it’s just a hop and short drive on I-264 to Louisville International Airport. Families often visit the Louisville Zoo and Mega Cavern also a short drive from the neighborhood. The Louisville Nature Center and Preserve, Louisville Tennis Center and Douglas Park are nearby.
Directly across Bardstown Road from Gardiner Lane Shopping Center, lies the most interesting landmark in Upper Highlands: Farmington Historic Home, at one time a 550-acre hemp plantation. John and Lucy Fry Speed had the Federal-style home built in 1815 to live in with their 13 children. Farmington functions as a museum today, and visitors may tour it year-round Tuesday through Saturday.
Upper Highlands offers almost everything for everybody. College students, couples with young children, and well-established adults appreciate living in this cosmopolitan, forward-thinking community.
