The Flint Hills surround Manhattan, and hold some of the last remaining unplowed tallgrass prairies in North America. One place to enjoy the rolling hills is at the Spillway State Park area of Turtle Creek Reservoir, about 20 miles north of town.
No one who lives and works in Manhattan, Kansas lives very far from work. However, Western Lee Heights is especially convenient to the university campus, which is within easy walking distance. Fort Riley, another substantial employer, is about eight miles southwest of the neighborhood. Topeka is approximately 50 miles east on Interstate 70, and Kansas City is another 63 miles.
Western Lee Heights is a tidy neighborhood of older homes. It has an old-fashioned, small-town atmosphere, with all the conveniences of a modern city.
