West Meade Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
The West Meade neighborhood is one of the most convenient areas of Topeka, with recreation, entertainment, and shopping venues located close by. It is an old and quite elegant neighborhood, as well, with stately two-story homes and cozy bungalows nestled under large trees. Sidewalks can be found throughout the neighborhood.
West Meade is bound by I-70 and the Kansas River to the north. Other boundary roads include Southwest Topeka Boulevard, Southwest 6th Avenue, and Washburn Avenue.
Within the neighborhood boundaries is Ward-Meade Park, one of Topeka’s top attractions. Residents enjoy the year-round beauty and seasonal events, such as spring’s Tulip Time Festival and fall’s Apple Festival. Tours are available and many visitors like to try out their ghost hunting skills here. Even the park employees are convinced the place is haunted. Old Town has a 19th Century drugstore, complete with a working soda fountain, and other outbuildings. The garden gazebo on the grounds is a popular place for weddings.
Gage Park, also close, has the zoo, Reinisch Rose Garden, athletic courts and fields, an off-leash “bark park,” a theater, and 160 acres great for walking. The pond is used for fishing in summer and skating in the winter. The antique carousel, open in summer only, is a favorite for adults and children.
Another Topeka treasure is within walking distance or accessible by public transit. The Topeka-Shawnee Country Public Library is much more than a library, with its great bookstore, cafeteria, art gallery, and a busy calendar of events for all ages.
Washburn University is also quite close. This city university is home to 7,000 students, and the campus makes for great walks. WU also sponsors a free week-long concert series in June.
Residents are close to major shopping areas, including Westridge Mall and blocks of retail, dining, and shopping surrounding the mall.
