Women looking for a husband, take note: chances are better in Olathe, Kansas than in just about any other major city in the US. Although it’s considered a family- and kid-friendly city, 36 percent of the population of Olathe is single, and for every 100 women there are 99 men, a higher number of men than most similar cities.

On a topic that could or could not be related, Olathe is also the best place to survive a heart attack. Olathe’s cardiac arrest survivability rate is among the best in the country, according to its mayor, Michael Copeland. Statistics show heart attack survival rates have gone from single-digit numbers to more than 40 percent today. “So,” the mayor told a Kansas City newspaper, “if you have to have a heart attack, do it here and we’ll take care of you.” Rates for diabetes and obesity are lower than the national average, as well.

The US Census named Olathe one of the country’s top 25 fastest-growing cities with a population of 100,000 or more, the only city in Kansas and Missouri to make the list. Kansas City came in at a mere 120th. St. Louis was 249th.

Why the popularity? Good schools, a diverse tax base, affordable housing, big new developments and jobs close to home are just a few of the reasons residents love their town.

Olathe, a Native American word for “beautiful,” is 19 miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri. Although technically in Kansas, the city is considered part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Olathe and its neighboring cities of Gardner, De Soto and Edgerton are expected to be hot markets as the economy improves and the area grows along the Kansas 10 corridor.

With a median family income of just under $70,000 per year, Olathe has a large middle class and is regarded in the state as a city where many of the people are well-off, and a smaller share of its people living in poverty than most places in the state.

Once a prairie of wildflowers, Olathe is set for tremendous development; it’s no wonder both Money magazine and Relocate-America ranked Olathe #11 on their lists of the “100 Best Cities to Live in the United States.”
