Hot air balloons dot the sky with brilliant colors every summer in Indianola, Iowa. Hundreds of visitors converge on the community for the National Balloon Classic, eager to watch balloonists take part in various contests and skill tests. They can also visit the National Balloon Museum, located in Indianola.
Located 15 miles south of the Des Moines International Airport, Indianola is the county seat of Warren County. With the completion of the Highway 5 bypass, Indianola is a quick commute to Des Moines. For those who prefer to ride, Dart Ride Share assists commuters.
Simpson College draws about 1,500 full-time students to Indianola every year. A short walk from Simpson College is the town square, a great location filled with shops and restaurants.
Indianola was home to one of RAGBRI’s (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) most famous riders, Clarence Pickard. The 83-year-old rode in the first ever RAGBRI in 1973 on a woman’s bike, sporting a pith helmet.
