Union Park is a neighborhood in Des Moines, Iowa. The borders of the Union Park neighborhood are Washington Avenue on the south and Hull Avenue on the north. The eastern border is the railroad tracks and on the west 2nd Street and the Des Moines River.

Union Park is a great neighborhood for first-time home buyers. It is well located to public transportation, offers several parks and the homes are affordable. This is an older neighborhood with a variety of home styles including bungalows and conventional two-story homes. It is a good walking neighborhood.

Birdland Park is a large park that has a pool, tennis courts, ball fields, open spaces, river access and a whole lot more. The Saylorville Trail travels through the park along the river front.

Union Park is home to the Heritage Carousel. This is a replica of an antique wooden carousel. It is a hand-carved merry-go-round that will delight children of all ages. It is handicap accessible so that everyone can enjoy a ride. The park also includes a children’s water park, picnic tables, grills, a playground, and in the winter, cross country skiing. There are also tennis and basketball courts.

Grand View University is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church. It is a four-year co-ed liberal arts college with a strong campus-based ministry. The more than 2000 students are a diverse group and are both young adults and returning students. Both evening and weekend classes are offered to accommodate a variety of schedules.

When the residents of Union Park want to shop or to enjoy an evening out, they head to Historic East Village which is less than two miles away. It has a wide variety of small independent shops and restaurants. It is one of the treasures of Des Moines.
