The neighborhood of Salisbury Oaks is located roughly 12 miles southwest of downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The community extends to Grand Avenue on the north and 42nd Street on the west. On the south, it is bounded by the Iowa Interstate Railroad tracks, which in turn are bordered by parkland. The eastern boundaries are less conspicuous, but include 39th Street, Arapahoe Drive, and Lincoln Place Drive. The zip code for Salisbury Oaks is 50312, and it is within Polk County.

The Salisbury Oaks neighborhood covers more than a half square mile and has just fewer than 990 residents. As of 2008, the average household income in this neighborhood – $75,834 – was significantly higher than the state average of $43,583, making it a comparably affluent neighborhood by Des Moines standards. Most of the homes in Salisbury Oaks were built prior to 1940, but some new construction continued over the decades, dwindling since 1990.

Salisbury Oaks residents enjoy proximity to many area parks. The river meanders past on the south, surrounded by Ashworth Park, Water Works Park, and Gray’s Lake Park, as well as several others. This vast expanse of parkland is perfect for hiking, camping, biking, rafting, and other outdoor activities and water sports. To the west of the neighborhood is Greenwood Park. This city park hosts the Des Moines Art Center; it also offers walking trails and an amphitheater.

Clearly, Salisbury Oaks residents have no shortage of options when it comes to outdoor recreation; however, they are by no means cut off from civilization. Interstate 235 runs past the neighborhood within a mile to the north, providing residents with easy access to the rest of the city. This is also where you’ll find the Waveland Golf Course – one of the oldest public courses west of the Mississippi and arguably one of the finest courses in the city.

To the east along I-235 is the downtown area, which offers plenty to see and do. Among the attractions here are the state capitol building, several medical centers, Drake University, and Principal Park. Directly south of Salisbury Oaks, on the other side of the river/parkland, is the Des Moines International Airport.
