Linden Heights is a neighborhood in Des Moines. It lies south of Grand Avenue, accessible only by 42nd Street. It is an area of grand homes set on estate-like lawns. Large shade trees provide a sense of privacy. No one architectural style dominates, but a sense of artistry and style does. This is quite appropriate when the Des Moines Art Center is a neighbor.

Just strolling the campus of the art center is a fine experience when taking in the outdoor sculptures. The Art Center is primarily concerned with art of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum itself is a work of art, designed by three internationally recognized architects. The John and Mary Pappjohn Sculpture Park is a short distance away, near Des Moines Central Public Library.

The Des Moines Trails system runs along the southern part of the neighborhood, giving residents easy access to 100 miles of trails, parks, and historic spots around the city. The trail system also connects to the great recreational areas north of town, such as Saylorville Lake.

Less than a mile east of Linden Height is Des Moines University. Drake University is just north.

A bit farther east is the Sherman Hill area, noted for majestic homes dating to the city’s earliest days. It is also an area of impressive cathedrals, the Civic Center, and corporate and federal buildings.

The Wakonda Country Club is a short drive south. Both Des Moines Golf and Country Club and Glen Oaks Country Club are a bit farther, along I-80 and I-35. There are several good public courses within a short drive, including Willow Creek and Waveland.

Jordan Creek Town Center is a 200-acre complex, complete with movie theaters and hotel. Well-known retailers such as Williams-Sonoma, Dillard’s and Ann Taylor have a presence here. Costco, The Cheesecake Factory, and PF Changs are here as well.
