The tranquil beauty of three cemeteries graces the Woodland Heights neighborhood in Des Moines. The community has many solid oak trees and leafy maples, as well as other mature trees that shade its homes and sidewalks. Once part of a rural setting, this area was first called the Woodlands due to its natural beauty.

This historic urban neighborhood was developed well over a century ago using the latest residential construction designs from the early 1900s, Craftsman-style and Four Square homes. A large number of those original structures still exist, some with the help of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. More than $13 million has aided Woodland Heights residential restoration and renovation from 1995 through 2010. Neighborhood improvements included reclaiming 20 vacant lots and replacing them with new houses.

Several eateries, bars, specialty shops, and convenience stores are located on Ingersoll Avenue, which is the boundary separating the downtown area from the Woodland Heights neighborhood. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway marks the east boundary, 31st Street serves as the western edge, and Interstate 235 locks in the neighborhood from the north.

Schools, churches, and medical facilities are nearby. Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Blank Children’s Hospital, and Lutheran Hospital share a downtown campus a few blocks from Woodland Heights’ southern boundary. Mercy Hospital and Broadlawns Medical Center are also close.

The Woodland Heights area is walkable. The main building for the Des Moines Public Library on Grand Avenue is a short distance away. For those who prefer the convenience of a bus, the Des Moines Area Rapid Transit runs several routes, with easy access from most neighborhoods.

In addition having an abundance of scenic greenery, the Woodland Heights community overlooks the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. Some of its residents enjoy the downtown river view from their homes.
