Beaverdale grabbed the national spotlight in September, 2010 when President Obama held a backyard meeting at the home of a local resident.

Traditionally one of the most popular neighborhoods in Des Moines, Beaverdale is known for its distinctive one and a half story classic brick homes built in the 1930s. Local real estate agents say there are always buyers looking for a well-maintained Beaverdale Brick featuring original hardwood floors and crown molding.

The Beaverdale Neighborhood Association sponsors the annual Beaverdale Fall Festival set in Beaverdale Park. The group believes Beaverdale’s reputation for community pride and a welcoming attitude are a few attributes that keep the neighborhood high on the search list for people moving to the capital city.

Boasting quick commute times, Beaverdale is located just north of the metro area skirted on the south by the arterial of University Avenue near Drake University. The north boundary of Douglas Avenue is another busy route. The pace for locals is less hectic. Neighbors often visit on tree-lined sidewalks while out for an evening stroll.

Once part of the larger Urbandale area, residents established a separate identity when Urbandale incorporated in 1917. Home to only 4 businesses in 1921, the area supported 54 businesses by 1940. Local businesses are still the focus in this self-contained neighborhood.

Beaverdale’s urban setting is slightly misleading according to many who live there. With amenities including a variety of stores, eateries, parks, schools and other key facilities, the neighborhood often seems more like an insulated suburb with a small-town feel.

Other Beaverdale areas of interest include the Wallace-Ashby District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Veteran’s Administrations Hospital.
