The Wood neighborhood is composed of large ranch homes and apartment complexes. It is a neighborhood of large lawns, heavily-shaded streets, parks, and an elementary school.

Wood is bound by Highway 6, Sioux Avenue Southeast, Sycamore Street, and Taylor Drive. Fairmeadows Park sits within its boundaries, and Wetherby Park lies along the west boundary.

Wetherby Park is a real neighborhood jewel. At almost 25 acres, it is the site of soccer games, nature study, and trails for hiking, biking, and jogging. The park also provides basketball courts, picnic facilities, and community gardens. The sizable garden plots are available to residents for a nominal fee. The Iowa River Corridor trail, which is Iowa’s longest trail, passes close to Wetherby Park.

Other neighborhood recreational facilities include the 18-hole Pleasant Valley Golf Course and Iowa City Kickers Soccer Park, both within a five-minute drive. Hi Point Golf Course is also a public course, which offers 18 holes of golf and is 10 miles from the neighborhood.

The neighborhood is close to two higher educational facilities. The University of Iowa sits 10 minutes away. With a full array of collegiate sports and six museums, the campus is a lively place for the 30,000 students. The Englert Civic Theatre, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, features quality performances year round. Kirkwood Community College lies within walking distance of the neighborhood.

Several retailers sit close to Wood, along Highway 6. A short drive takes residents to Coral Ridge Mall, a comprehensive retail and entertainment center. Coral Ridge has four major department stores along with many specialty stores, restaurants, and high-end retailers. Coral Ridge also has a 10-theater cinemaplex, the Iowa Children’s Museum, and an ice arena. There is also a children’s play area and antique carousel.
