Longfellow is a community on the far southeastern side of Iowa City, Iowa, around six miles from the central downtown area and about a 40-minute drive from Cedar Rapids. This large community is roughly bounded by Interstate 80 on the north and South Scott Boulevard on the west. Highway 6 traverses the south side of the neighborhood from west to east. The zip code is 52240, and the neighborhood is part of Johnson County.

Longfellow is one of the older residential areas in the city. Prior to 1990, many of its homes were rundown or abandoned. Some were torn down and replaced with multiplex apartments, but a majority were renovated and restored according to a plan to retain the historic look and feel of the community. Longfellow is once again a highly desirable neighborhood, and at least three of the community’s districts and several of its individual homes have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The neighborhood consists of about 900 single-family homes. These charming residences range in style from Craftsman bungalows to stately Queen Annes; there is a collection of quaint stone-clad cottages with thatched roofs that date to as early as 1920 and are credited to local architect Howard Moffitt.

Proximity to the University of Iowa makes this a popular neighborhood among families, professionals, and aspiring college students. Residents are also only a short drive from the many shops, eateries, entertainment venues, and cultural attractions in the downtown area. The nearby schools are exceptional, and there is a community-wide emphasis on arts and culture thanks to massive public-arts projects.
