Wellington Heights Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
Nestled along the banks of the Cedar River and home to 128,056 people, Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in the state of Iowa and offers an assortment of cultural and recreational activities. Originally established in 1839, the city lies 20 miles north of Iowa City and 100 miles east of Des Moines, and was named for the rapids in the Cedar River near the present-day downtown.
Although the 64.4 square miles that comprise Cedar Rapids are divided into 14 specific ZIP codes, the city’s primary sections are best-known by their four general geographic locations as the Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast sides.
The Wellington Heights neighborhood, located in the city’s Southeast side, is bordered by the Cedar River to the west, First Avenue to the north, Mount Vernon Road to the south, and Cottage Grove Avenue to the east. The neighborhood contains a large portion of the city’s downtown area, including Green Square Park, St. Luke’s Medical Hospital, and the majority of urban thoroughfares such as Second, Third and Fourth Avenues.
Located in the downtown area of Wellington Heights are a myriad of cultural attractions, including the Paramount Theatre, U.S. Cellular Center, and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, which features extensive collections from several prominent Iowa artists such as Grant Wood.
One of the oldest areas in the city, the majority of homes in the Wellington Heights neighborhood were built before 1939 with relatively little development occurring after 1979. The area is home to many historic houses and churches, but some portions are subject to higher crime rates as a result of its urban territory. Wellington Heights is minutes from Interstate 380, which runs north and south from Coralville to Waterloo and connects Cedar Rapids to Interstate 80, approximately 20 miles to the south.
