Located on the South Shore of Lake Michigan, Lake County contains everything from flat coastal areas to rolling hills. A short drive south from Chicago, this is a popular area and is considered part of the Chicago metro area. The county was formed in 1837 and contains several historic sites, such as the Old Lake County Courthouse, built in 1878.
The courthouse is the central landmark of the county seat, Crown Point. This picturesque city is home to the annual Lake County Fair, the second largest fair in the state. Held in August, the fair features events and entertainment, including a demolition derby and monster trucks.
Made famous by the 1957 Broadway musical The Music Man, Gary is also located in Lake County. Gary is a large city located 25 miles from downtown Chicago. Gary is home to Indiana University Northwest and Ivy Tech Community College Northwest.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is partly located in Lake County. This park is located along the southern shore of Lake Michigan and contains about 25 miles of shoreline. It contains beautiful natural areas and several historic areas, including the Bailly Homestead, which dates to the early 1820s. Popular activities in the park include camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding.
