In the late 1700s, General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a Brigadier General during the Revolutionary War, ordered the construction of a fort. The fort, completed in 1794, was named for him. The population grew, and in 1829, Fort Wayne became a town. In 1840, it was established as a city. Today, those historic beginnings are evident in the Victorian architecture that dominates the area. Curvy Queen Anne turrets and boxy Italianate lines give Fort Wayne, Indiana a character that can’t be topped.
Today, Fort Wayne is home to an extensive park and trail system. The city prides itself on having a park within walking distance for every one out of five children. Downtown Fort Wayne is home to unique shops, art galleries, and boutiques. Fort Wayne enjoys a strong economy based in manufacturing, logistics, defense, and insurance. Some of the major companies based in the city include Steel Dynamics, Vera Bradley, BFGoodrich, and Lincoln Financial.
