Akin Park, located in Evansville, Indiana, is named for William M. Akin, the founder and president of Akin Erskine Milling Company, an historic Evansville milling company. Like most of the Evansville area, the majority of the homes are older, having been built around the middle of the twentieth century. There has been a neighborhood movement, spurred by a local artist, who has bought homes in the area. Homes are being painted; yards are being landscaped, and in some, twenty-foot flag poles are being put up.
The neighborhood park, Akin Park, is one of the most popular neighborhood parks in Evansville. The park is spacious, with plenty of room to exercise or just enjoy the open area. The park includes a nice playground. Akin Park is the site of Evansville’s first, ever air show. There are plans to add a walking trail to the area.
The neighborhood is also a few blocks east of the Ohio River and Sunset Park, one of the city’s oldest, most historic parks. For more recreation, the YMCA is also nearby. A little further north is Bayard Park.
The Evansville-Vanderburgh library, where residents can find free books, movies, and more, is located next to Bayard Park. Residents can easily take care of their shopping needs at the Covert and Lodge Shopping Center.
Students in high school attend Benjamin Bosse High School. Glenwood Middle School takes care of the educational needs of the middle school students. Elementary students attend Lodge, John M. Culver or Lincoln Elementary School. Private schools are also in the area.
