The Glen Aire neighborhood offers residents easy access to shopping, dining, and major thoroughfares. It can easily be accessed from Taylor Avenue or Stevenson Drive. It is equidistant to Highways 55 and 72 with easy access to the 6th Street corridor that runs through downtown.
One of Springfield’s most popular tourist spots, the Dana Thomas House, is located near the Glen Aire neighborhood along Lawrence Avenue. Tours of the house are available between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The Dana Thomas House was built for local socialite Susan Dana Thomas. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in his epic prairie style. The house spans more than 12,000 square feet and includes 35 rooms and a bowling alley. Tours of the home provide children and adults alike a great education in architectural history.
Historic Bunn Golf Course was opened in 1911 and is a full 18-hole, regulation-length course built to USGA specifications. Players eight years of age and up may play on its more than 6,000 yards of golf straights. Bunn can be accessed from Taylor Road in the Glen Aire neighborhood.
The Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Museum is located on South 7th Street and houses many historically relevant Civil War-era items and photographs. Items include medals, uniforms, weapons, flags, and other paraphernalia. The museum originally started in a small house in 1941 but moved to its present location in 1963. One item of note is an American flag that John Wilkes Booth injured himself on while attempting to make a quick escape from the Ford Theater after assassinating President Lincoln.
