Carterville is a suburban community located about nine miles northeast of Carbondale. It is situated on the northern shore of Crab Orchard Lake next to the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. Settled in 1866, downtown Carterville reflects the frontier-town style architecture in its boxy, brick storefronts lining wide sidewalks.
Crab Orchard Lake is a large reservoir that spans 6,965 acres. The lake is popular for fishing, boating, and swimming. The lake also offers two campgrounds. The wildlife refuge protects mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Some of the wildlife that can be seen in the refuge includes the elusive bobcat, wild turkey, and the bald eagle. The refuge contains hardwood forest, wetlands, and brush land.
Carterville is home to John A. Logan College, a community college established in 1967. The school is named for a Civil War general who represented Illinois in the US Congress both before and after the war. JALC offers career prep programs and a two-year college transfer curriculum. The school is home to the John A. Logan College Museum, which includes natural history, cultural heritage, and visual arts.
