Sandwiched between the popular Highland Park Golf Course and scenic Miller Park Lake, the South Hill neighborhood is all about diversity. A variety of ages, jobs, and income levels of residents gives the neighborhood its distinctive character.
Some of the most affordable housing in Bloomington is listed in the South Hill area. Single family homes and several apartment complexes are available for rent and for sale. Historical sites contrast with housing developments with some of the city’s main attractions next door to South Hill.
Considered a west Bloomington neighborhood, South Hill is surrounded by Miller Park, Oakland Avenue, Veterans Parkway and Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Miller Park attracts people from Bloomington-Normal and surrounding areas.
South Hill residents are next to Miller Park and its impressive zoo. In addition to extensive indoor and outdoor animal exhibits, the zoo offers educational programs for children and adults. Outside the zoo facility, a large lake allows boating. The park offers other amenities including picnic areas and a concession stand.
Another nearby notable site, Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, has significant historical value. The well kept grounds claim the burial site of many nationally known figures. Presidential candidate and Bloomington native Adali Stevenson is buried in the historic cemetery. His grandfather, a former vice president of the United States, is also buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitors can tour the historic cemetery at no charge.
Bloomington Public School District assignments for those living in the South Hill neighborhood include Irving Elementary School, Bloomington Junior High School and Bloomington High School. Alternative schools and special services are available as needed. Private schools also serve the area.
