Small cottages framed by fences, craftsman style homes, and apartment buildings create the panarama to the east of Illinois Weslyan University. The Somerset Point neighborhood is home to many college students, professionals and families. The area also provides reasonable housing rates for buyers and renters.
A variety of ages and lifestyles co-exist in the established Somerset Point neighorhood surrounded by the Old East Side, Pineridge, Franklin Park, and Maplewood neighborhoods. Easy access to main routes for local residents is provided with access to Highways 9 and 150 combined on East Empire Street. That route leads directly to the north/south road, Highway 51.
Proximity to Illinois Weslyan University has many benefits including access to Wilder Field, the stadium for the University. Recently renovated, the field was completed in 1893 and named for the school’s first president, Rev. William Henry Wilder. The Titans have battled on Wilder Field for over a hundred years.
Weslyan’s McPherson Theater provides unique cultural events for the community. Recitals, live performances and theatrical productions grace the stage at the theater. The Bloomington-Normal area is known for impressive performance arts as the arts scene is a big draw for the area. In addition to the arts at Illinois State and Weslyan, Bloomington boasts its own ballet company, a Shakespearean festival, community theater and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra season with performances held at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.
In addition to entertainment and athletic events from area colleges, city parks offer another form of recreation. Fell Park in the Somerset Point area pales in size to the nearby Franklin Park. One of the city’s oldest parks, the historic Franklin Park offers a tranquil setting. It’s not designed for competitive games; its setting allows for relaxed family time.
