Bloomington’s downtown area is a vibrant and eclectic area that is not only the nightlife center of McLean county; it has recently been revived to the state of its former glory and is now an equally thriving daytime area. Downtown Bloomington is located in zip code 61701.
The downtown area boasts a long list of retail shops, arts venues, and all sorts of different restaurants, including everything from fine dining to international cuisine and a pub, a bakery, and cafe. There is also a coffee house and a natural foods grocery store. The affordability of retail spaces makes all of this possible.
North Main Street, Center Street, Madison Street, Front Street, East and West Washington Street, and Jefferson Street all represent a haven for all sorts of artists, musicians, crafts people and gallery owners. Because the studio space is so affordable, these people are very eager to take advantage of it.
The Livingston Building at 102 West Washington Street was the first “skyscraper” in downstate Illinois. The entire block of buildings burned down in 1855. The building at 116 West Washington Street was once the home of Bunnell’s Shoe Store/The Bootery. It now houses an eatery called Boo Boo’s Dawghouse. The top two floors of the building are luxury apartments.
The 209 East Washington Building’s four floors of unfinished space are going to be turned into huge loft residences, complete with modern conveniences and all of the architectural details of the historic building.
The combination of great restaurants and one of a kind shops, all of which are local businesses, and the hip and upscale living spaces that are located on the upper floors of these buildings makes this one of the most popular areas of Bloomington.
