Walking through Dimmitt’s Grove is like traveling through history, as the stunning architecture and restored homes in this neighborhood recall the late 1800s when it was developed. The neighborhood was once home to some of Bloomington’s most well-known residents, and the house’s new owners have worked to restore and preserve the historic homes’ charm and beauty. The neighborhood covers a 26-block area and it is known for the luxury and privacy it offers residents.
The houses in Dimmitt’s Grove represent a broad range of architectural styles, as wealthy residents custom built each one. For example, a Queen Anne style in the 400 block of East Grove Street was built by General Ashael Gridley, the city’s first millionaire, for his son. Reuben Moore Benjamin, an attorney who knew Abraham Lincoln, built a New England sidehall house on the street in 1853. Other famous former residents were foreign news correspondents, politicians and businessmen.
In 1987, neighborhood residents formed an association to preserve the neighborhood’s heritage and bring the neighborhood together through newsletters and neighborhood events. The association recently has hosted a chili cook-off and neighborhood flea market.
Dimmitt’s Grove encompasses ZIP code 61701, and it is just southeast of downtown Bloomington. The neighborhood is close to several Bloomington amenities, including the Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal, Advocate BroMenn Medical Center and Eastland Mall.
Many Dimmitt’s Grove residents enjoy golf at Lakeside Country Club, Bloomington Country Club and the Highland Park Golf Course, which are just minutes away. The popular State Farm Park features playgrounds, miniature golf, disc golf, basketball courts, swimming pools, athletic fields and picnic shelters. A water park was added in 2007.
