In 1864, Bluetown was platted by Joseph Schertz. The unusual name’s origins are a mystery, but could be related to the homes at the time, which were painted blue and built on stilts due to swampy conditions. In 1884 Bluetown and neighboring Coleville incorporated as the village of Hilton. Finally, in 1889, the name was changed to the Village of East Peoria, which became the City of East Peoria in 1919.
