Smyrna, GA Apartments for Rent

In spring, the sidewalks and roadways, parks and neighborhoods, and even downtown planters are filled with sunny pops of bright yellow. This is Smyrna, Georgia – or the Jonquil City! So, what’s a jonquil? It’s a perky, fragrant yellow flower with long, narrow leaves. And during spring in Smyrna, they’re everywhere!

In 1883, a settler named Samuel Taylor and his wife moved from Atlanta and purchased 80 acres of property in Smyrna. Taylor has a son living in Spokane, Washington who sent his parents a housewarming gift of sorts – a sack filled with jonquil bulbs. With so many bulbs to plant, the Taylors shared some with friends and neighbors. Since these hardy bulbs require little care, they quickly multiplied, blooming more prolifically year after year. The house Taylor and his wife lived in is now part of Taylor-Brawner Park, and the cheerful flowers are celebrated annually at the Jonquil Festival.

Smyrna, located just 10 miles from downtown Atlanta, is one of the city’s most popular suburbs. Smyrna is located in Cobb County and is home to about 50,000 residents. The city’s popular neighborhoods include its oldest, Williams Park. This neighborhood contains historic homes that include Victorian and Craftsman styles, modern lofts, and mixed-use developments that include a variety of shops and restaurants.

The Village Green is at the heart of Smyrna. This downtown square features a central fountain, beautiful landscaping, and is surrounded by shops, restaurants, the library, the Smyrna Community Center, and City Hall. The Village Green is the location of city events, festivals, and outdoor concerts. The Community Center has two gymnasiums, three racquetball courts, a game room, and a walking track.

Market Village is another fantastic location you’ll want to check out when searching for apartments in Smyrna. The Market Village contains townhomes, retail space, and office space. This popular mixed-use community is surrounded by shops and restaurants and is located downtown.

Smyrna was first settled around 1830, and the city saw two Civil War battles – the Battle of Smyrna Camp Ground and the Battle of Ruff’s Mill – occurring within two days. The Union Army, led by General William Sherman, burned most of the town – and much of Cobb County – in 1864. The Cox/Armstrong Civil War Collection is displayed in three locations: Brawner Hall, City Hall, and the Smyrna Public Library.

The Silver Comet Trail – a popular rail trail – begins in Smyrna. This walking, jogging, and bicycle path follows the path of the Silver Comet passenger train that stopped operating in 1969. If you enjoy jogging, in-line skating, horseback riding, skateboarding, walking, or bicycling, you’ll love living in a Smyrna apartment, where you’ll be able to enjoy this trail any time! From Smyrna, the trail leads through Paulding and Polk counties before connecting with the Chief Ladiga Trail at the Alabama border. Together, these trails form one continuous 94-mile trail.
