This Liberia, thousands of miles away from the small country on the west coast of Africa, shares the tropical climate–meaning hot, sometimes wet summers and mild shirt-sleeve winters–of its namesake, but it is at most three miles from the beaches along the Atlantic and historic downtown Hollywood.
One-block west of Liberia is Interstate 95 and an adjacent strip mall with anchor stores including Kmart and Barnes & Noble. Beyond that is Toppeekeegee Yugnee Park, known locally as TY’s Park. The name means “gathering place” in the language of the Seminole people. This 150-acre urban space offers two miles of jogging/biking/skating pathways, picnic areas, and boat rentals to enjoy the park’s lake. Also available is the Castaway Water Park, an RV campground, and a butterfly garden.
The neighborhood itself is a collection of single-family homes, duplexes, and apartments. This is a fairly new development, with most homes going up after 2000. One of the newest additions is the Crystal Lake Apartments, on the western end of Liberia next to the man-made Crystal Lake. Though many of the area’s single-family homes and duplexes do come up for rental, these apartments have a more resort-like atmosphere. Among the onsite offerings are an outdoor pool, fitness center, library, and children’s playground. This is a gated complex that does not allow pets.
Nearby schools include Mary M Bethune Elementary, Attucks Middle, and Ebony Village Preschool. All are inside the community. South Broward High is roughly a mile away. No less than nine churches are either inside Liberia or within a few blocks walk. Broward County Transit provides bus service along North 23rd Avenue and North 22nd Avenue, the area’s two major north-south roadways.
