Windmere is a community located in the city of Lutz, FLorida. This area is heavy with trees and a variety of tropical vegetation. Situated to the northeast of Tampa, this neighborhood is filled with historic charm.
There is a good deal of history connected with Windmere and Lutz. The Tampa Northern Railroad carried goods from Brookville to Tampa, and the Lutz Station was one of the main stops along its corridor. Built in the early 1900s, the Lutz Station was built by William P. Lutz, a train conductor who helped design and build the station. The city’s first post office was located at the station, as well. Today, the train station is a landmark and a tourist attraction for Lutz. The train station is big part of the city’s history, and to this day, Lutz generates lots of local appeal with the station as a point of interest
Just to the northeast and a short drive away, is Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park. This incredibly large park has all the amenities anyone would want when visiting a park. Jay B. Starkey Park has so much to do that you couldn’t do it all in one weekend. You can hike, camp, canoe, kayak, bike, inline skate, picnic, and ride horses. There are over seven miles of trails for outdoor enthusiasts and casual park visitors. There is also a bird-watching area in the park where over 150 species of birds have been sighted. There is fresh-water fishing in the Anclote River and the Pithlachascotee River waters in the park.
Windmere is just a short drive from downtown Tampa. If you want big-city dining and shopping, Tampa will take care of those cravings quickly. Much of Tampa is designed with the tourist shopper in mind, but even as residents, the locals here still enjoy all it has to offer.
