Lafayette Park Neighborhood

Lafayette Park is a small neighborhood in Tallahassee with a rich history. In 1824, President James Monroe granted the Marquis de Lafayette a township of land in any part of the United States as a sign of gratitude for lending money and for his efforts in the American Revolutionary War. Six square miles were selected in what is now Leon County in Florida, at the south side of Lafayette Park. In need of money, Lafayette sold a part of the land but unfortunately died in 1834, never having had a chance to see his land. By 1855, the Lafayette family had sold all the remaining land to various individuals.

Today, Lafayette Park boasts many amenities. It is home to around 4,351 residents. The neighborhood is conveniently located near schools, retail businesses, parks, and restaurants. Governor’s Square Mall is just a few blocks away, on Apalachee Parkway. The Capitol, downtown area, and Florida State University are about two miles away. Tallahassee Memorial Hospital is only a short walk from the Lafayette Park community.

In May 1932, the city of Tallahassee purchased 22 acres for the construction of a park. The Tallahassee Historical Society decided to have it named in memory of the Marquis de Lafayette. The Sue Herndon McCollum Community Center is situated in the park and offers residents a children’s playground, picnic facilities, and a gymnasium.

Parents of school-age children will appreciate the neighborhood’s proximity to many schools. Kate Sullivan Elementary School is right off Miccosukee Road, Elizabeth Cobb Middle School is off Hillcrest Street, and Trinity Catholic School is just off East Brevard Street. Leon High School is also nearby, right off East Tennessee Street.
