Baseball fans will appreciate the convenience of Thornwood to Pelican Baseball Park, where the minor league Pensacola Pelicans play. The park is located about a half-mile away, on the east side of The University of West Florida Campus.

Golfers may want to check out the course at Scenic Hills, just west of the UWF campus. A number of other courses are nearby, including Marcus Pointe and the four private A. C. Reed Clubs at the Naval Air Station.

Boaters and fishermen will appreciate the quick access to Escambia Bay, less than a mile east of Thornwood. Archie Glover Boat Ramp offers two ramps, a pier, and two pavilions. The nearest access for Thornwood residents is Swamphouse Marina on North Davis Highway.

A short drive south to the Gulf beaches and forts, a great site is Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island. Fort Pickens has launches for both powerboats and canoes. Built in 1829, it is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Chief Geronimo was once held captive here. An unusual natural feature is here, as well — a brackish lake in view of the Gulf.

Those who enjoy exploring the arts and culture of Pensacola will find plenty of activities nearby. Downtown, in an architecturally interesting district, are the Pensacola Museum of Art, Pensacola Symphony, and Saenger Theater. Pensacola Festivals sponsors events year round – some favorites being Mardi Gras, The Jazz Fest, and Great Gulf Coast Art Festival at Seville Square.
