With schools, parks, and the popular Town and Country Mall all close by, the Roble Loma neighborhood is certainly a family friendly one. Located in West Pensacola, this area lies near the John R. Jones Jr. Athletic Complex. The softball park has four 300-foot fields with 12-foot fences, covered dugouts, and a concession area.
Roble Loma residents will want to visit Golf Islands National Seashore National Park on Pensacola Bay. The park is open dawn to dusk for camping, fishing, boating, swimming, and picnics. The Visitor Center has displays of the area’s ecology and wildlife. The historical Fort Pickins is also located in the park. Fort Pickins specifically protected the naval yard built during the Civil War, and was operational until after WWII.
A favorite family attraction is the National Aviation Museum, which is located at the Naval Air Station just seven miles west of Pensacola. Visitors can view over four thousand artifacts and 150 restored aircraft from various military branches. Also available are Flight Simulators, an IMAX Theater, and lunch at the Cubi Bar Café. Practice sessions for the famous United States Navy’s Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron are held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at the museum site, where admission and parking are free.
Another must-see is the Historic Pensacola Village. The museum, which is actually twenty-seven properties, is located in the Pensacola National Register Historic District near the Bayfront Parkway. It is operated by West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc., an affiliate of the University of West Florida. Eleven of these sites are open to the public, including the 1805 French-Creole Lavalle House, the 1871 Dorr House, the 1832 Old Christ Church, and the 1890 Lear-Rocheblave House. Tours can be either self-guided or guided. The facility is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, Tuesday through Saturday.
