Lakeland, Florida is so named for its large concentration of lakes. The city has 38 named lakes and many more that are unnamed. A number of these unnamed lakes surround one of Lakeland’s southern neighborhoods known as Imperial. The neighborhood is in the 33803 zip code and within Polk County. Communities that neighbor Imperial include Edgewood, Southwest Lakeland, and Cleveland Heights.
Imperial is a diverse neighborhood containing residential homes, apartment buildings, and businesses. Residences are concentrated on side streets that extend from the west end of Imperial Boulevard. The neighborhood is perhaps best known for Merchants Walk, a shopping center that contains various large chain stores and restaurants. Extending along the east side of Merchants Walk is South Florida Avenue, where more shopping and dining venues are located.
Although the Imperial neighborhood is surrounded by a handful of unnamed lakes, there are larger named lakes within a two-mile radius of the the community. To the east is Lake John, and the larger Lake Hollingsworth is to the northeast of the community. Hollingsworth provides a walking trail around the lake that passes by Florida Southern College on the north side. A mass collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture can be viewed from the lake’s path.
To the north, in the Southwest Lakeland neighborhood, are Southwest Elementary and Southwest Middle Schools. Carlton W. Palmore Elementary School is less than a mile to the southeast. George W. Jenkins High School is approximately three miles to the southeast, while Lakeland High School is northeast of the community by about 2.5 miles.
