Originally named Indian River City, Cocoa boasts a residential population of about 16,000. Located along the Space Coast of Florida’s eastern shores, Cocoa has several city parks, access to long stretches of beachfront, and ample shopping and dining options.
North of Dixon Boulevard, about five minutes from downtown Cocoa, is the neighborhood of Cocoa Hills. An established residential area with winding lanes—including several with sidewalks—Cocoa Hills is within walking distance to fast food, a barber, and a grocery store. In addition, residents of Cocoa Hills can walk to the bus stops along Dixon Boulevard. There are two located less than a half-mile away. The local bus service is via the Space Coast Area Transit Authority.
Cocoa Hills is close to a pharmacy, a Wal-Mart Super Center, and Clearlake Middle School. The Brevard County Community College campus is less than two miles from Cocoa Hills, with the Florida Solar Energy Center is on the campus’ northern end. The Energy Center was established in 1975 as a research facility for the state. It has won the Energy Star award multiple times and employs more than 100 people.
Bus transport is available along Clearlake Road, which is the eastern border of the community college. The local YMCA sits on Clearlake Road, adjacent to the college. On the northern end of campus, west of the Energy Center, is Travis Park.
Travis Park is home to a recreation center, which is nicknamed the Tiger Den because it is close to Cocoa High School, home of the Tigers. Its gymnasium is a popular site for local basketball games and other activities. The outdoor park area has a half-basketball court plus a playground and sand volleyball courts. The paved nature trail winds from the park, around Clear Lake, and extends to the Brevard Museum.
