Melbourne, also known as the Harbor City, boasts nine miles of waterfront, state-of-the-art medical facilities, and residential neighborhoods close to schools, shopping, and dining. Less than two miles west of U.S. Route 1/Dixie Highway Northeast is the small neighborhood of Blakes. It lies east of Croton Road and south of Aurora Road/County Road 511.
The neighborhood of Blakes, which is in ZIP code 32935, includes the streets of Hibiscus, Date, Wolverine, and Begonia, as well as Thompson Court, Gainey Lane, and Carolina Avenue. The single-family homes are ranch style on lots with mature trees, including Florida’s signature palms.
Eau Gallie Boulevard, a main Melbourne roadway, is less than a mile south of the community, providing a quick route to the beach. Eau Gallie Boulevard becomes the Eau Gallie Causeway, which connects Melbourne to the Atlantic coastal area of Indian Harbor Beach.
Four miles from Blakes, on Thomas Barbour Drive, is Ballard Park. This city park sits between the Indian River Lagoon and the Eau Gallie River. Residents and visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including tennis, basketball, and picnics. The park features a children’s playground area and convenient boat ramps.
North of Ballard Park, only three miles from Blakes, are the historic Rossetter Museum House and Gardens. Located on Highland Avenue, the museum offers tours daily. The property was settled in 1859 by Eau Gallie’s Houston family. In 1904, James Wadsworth Rossetter purchased it. The historic house has been restored as it appeared in 1908.
The neighborhood of Blakes is served by the Wuesthoff Medical Center, only three miles away on North Wickham Road. The hospital opened its doors in 2002 as an acute care facility with only private rooms. Wuesthoff Health Care has been a part of Brevard County since 1941.
