Coral Gables is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, southwest of downtown Miami. Its population is approximately 43,000. Coral Gables was one of the first fully-planned communities in the US, created in 1925.

The plan for the city was based on the “City Beautiful” movement popular in the 19th century, and developer George Merrick incorporated both secluded residential enclaves and commercial areas in its plan, and Mediterranean architectural styles.

Preservation of this architecture is of foremost importance here; Coral Gables was one of the first cities in Florida to adopt a Historical Resources Ordinance, in 1973, helping preserve structures that are significant architecturally or historically. Coral Gables boasts one of three National Landmarks in Miami-Dade County: The Biltmore Hotel, built in 1926. Nine properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Coral Gables Merrick House, Venetian Pool, and Coral Gables City Hall.

In the recent past, Coral Gables has enjoyed a good period of growth, resulting in a healthy economy. The city is home to 175 multinational companies and 26 international consulates and trade offices. This economic climate has helped not only to bring new business to the city, but helped to maintain lower property taxes for residents.

Both residential and business residents enjoy excellent city services including a Class 1 Fire Department, a fully-accredited Police Department and the highest-awarded Building and Zoning Department rating. Coral Gables has been named a “Tree City USA” for 23 consecutive years.

This city supports its arts and culture, as well, with more than 30 fine art galleries. Coral Gables has been called the “fine dining capital of South Florida,” and has the highest concentration of live theater in Miami-Dade County. Coral Gables is known as a pedestrian-friendly destination, and its vintage-style, hybrid electric trolleys offer another convenient and scenic way to move about the business, shopping, and entertainment destinations in downtown Coral Gables.

Shopping venues include the Village of Merrick Park, anchored by Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. The city’s famed Miracle Mile offers European-style outdoor cafes, a variety of specialty stores, and more than 120 international restaurants.

The University of Miami, located in the heart of Coral Gables, is one of only 29 private research universities in the nation. Almost 15,000 students are enrolled here.
