Many visitors to Washington, D.C. come expecting the expected: lots of classic architecture. Indeed, six of the top 10 buildings rated by the American Institute of Architects as “America’s Favorite Buildings” are here. But how many know that our nation’s capital is also a haven for foodies, has a hopping nightlife, and is a great place to keep fit?
Every American should visit Washington, D.C. – or “DC” as it’s called by locals, and view the real estate we collectively own: the White House, the Washington National Cathedral, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and others, as well as the rows of Japanese cherry blossom trees bloom along the Tidal Basin every spring.
But stay long enough to get to know the real DC. For instance, did you know that our capital has a great reputation in foodie circles? In fact, celebrity chefs including Wolfgang Puck are setting up shop here, adding their own personality to the growing epicurean community. Their focus on fresh, local ingredients led Cooking Light magazine to name DC one of the country’s “healthiest cities.”
When the sun sets over the Potomac this city really springs to life, especially the music scene. The U Street Corridor, nicknamed "Washington's Black Broadway” has hosted legends such as Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. Other jazz venues feature modern blues, such as Madam's Organ in the Adams Morgan neighborhood and Blues Alley in Georgetown. Native son Chuck Brown, dubbed “the Godfather of go-go,” has been a star in that scene since the late 1970s when his first hit, “Bustin’ Loose,” introduced DC’s own style of music, go-go.
Georgetown is a historic and hip neighborhood with cobble-stoned streets in the waterfront district; it is home to Georgetown University, Tudor Place Historic House and Garden, the Kreeger Museum, Old Stone House and the C&O Canal.
If sports is the thing, DC is the place: Washington is one of only 13 cities in the US with teams from all four major professional men's sports. The Washington Wizards (NBA) and the Washington Capitals (NHL) play at the Verizon Center in Chinatown. Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals play at Nationals Park; the DC United (Major League Soccer) plays at RFK Stadium. The Washington Redskins (NFL) play at nearby FedExField in Landover, Maryland.
