In 1651, the Dutch West India Company established a colony in the New World along the Delaware River. A few power struggles ensued – including one in 1664 with the English, who seized the New Netherland colony and renamed it “New Castle.” In 1682, William Penn first stepped foot into the New World near The Strand and Delaware Street. Before Penn established Philadelphia, the center of government was New Castle.

History is everywhere in New Castle – it echoes in the historic architecture and along the narrow streets framed by brick-lined sidewalks and ancient towering trees. The town hasn’t changed all that much in the 360-plus years of existence – in fact, many of its buildings date back to the 1700s.

As you explore New Castle apartments for rent, be sure to check out a few of its amazing historic locations. Dutch House, for example, dates back to the late 17th century. Now a museum, the house contains Dutch Colonial artifacts that include a 1714 Bible, a kas, and a spoon rack. The Old Library Museum is a unique building that features self-guided tours. The hexagonal brick library was built in 1892. Amstel House, built in the 1730s, is a colonial mansion that was built by Dr. John Finney. Now a museum, the house is open for guided tours.

From the charming stores, art galleries, and boutiques to the taverns, pubs, restaurants, and coffee houses, New Castle is a great place to call home. Spend the day at Battery Park and enjoy amazing views of the Delaware River. Or, from your New Castle apartment, you can explore the Brandywine Valley, travel into Philadelphia or Baltimore, or just enjoy strolling through the town green and admiring this stunning, historic city.
