Many people dream of life in a postcard-pretty New England town, complete with quaint brownstones, lighthouses and a historic town square. Springs, summers and falls would be lovely; but the winters, they say, would be too forbidding. All that snow, for weeks on end. Yikes!

But residents of Dover, Delaware apartments have a secret. Winters can be cold, but the weather is tempered by the Delaware Bay and by the Appalachians, which shield the city from bitter conditions. Snow is typically light, averages 14 inches, falls a few inches at a time and does not usually remain on the ground for long. Perfect!

Want one more secret? The state of Delaware offers tax-free shopping! That’s not really a secret; people travel hundreds of miles to take advantage of the savings throughout downtown Dover and in nationally-known retailers at the Dover Mall. There’s no limit on purchases, and the tax-free status extends to big-ticket items such as cars, as well.

The city of Dover is the capital and second largest city in Delaware, located on the St. Jones River. The Delaware state assembly settled permanently in Dover in October 1781 within the city’s central square, known as the Green.

The historic Green was the location of many rallies, troop reviews, and other patriotic events. Today, the Green remains the heart of Dover’s historic district and is the location of the Delaware Supreme Court and the Kent County Courthouse.

Dover is a thriving community, enjoying continued residential, commercial, industrial and institutional development. The city is, in fact, one of the faster-growing areas in the state of Delaware, due in large part to the relatively low cost of living.

Four school districts and five colleges are supported by the city. Thirteen major employers offer opportunities from government to manufacturing. Dover’s police force includes over 90 uniformed officers, and fire protection is provided by a volunteer fire department.

There’s lots to do in this small town; two weekends a year, in June and September, NASCAR stock car races are held at Dover International Speedway, attracting over 100,000 spectators.

Many people enjoy a trip to nearby Amish Country, just west of the city of Dover. Homes and schools are not open to the public, but visitors are welcomed at their shops. Dover’s own Fordham Brewing Company offers tours of their brewery every Saturday.
