Upper Albany is a neighborhood on the north side of Hartford, Connecticut, about two and a half miles from the center of the downtown area. This community is roughly bounded by Homestead Avenue on the south and west, Westbourne Parkway and Greenfield Street on the north, and Irving and Enfield Streets on the east. The community’s namesake, Albany Avenue, and Highway 44 traverse the middle of the community from west to east. This Hartford County neighborhood is within the 06105 and 06112 zip codes.
The Upper Albany neighborhood spans just over three quarters of a square mile and is home to nearly 9,250 residents, as of 2009. The community is largely residential, but plenty of commercial offerings exist within its borders, especially along Albany Avenue. This thoroughfare is one of the city’s most traveled roadways, and it provides access to the downtown area as it traverses the center of the Upper Albany Historic District.
This residential neighborhood was developed during the early part of the 20th century. It is made up almost exclusively of two-family frame housing, typically built in the Colonial Revival or Queen Anne style. Many of the homes were constructed using the same master plan, and common architectural details like wood-shingle siding and Tuscan-columned porches provide for a sense of visual unity. The homes are quite close together, at least in the historic district, and the streets in this pedestrian-friendly community are lined with sidewalks and shade trees.
Residents are within walking distance of many area attractions and amenities, including the St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, the University of Connecticut School of Law, Elizabeth Park, Keney Park Pond, the University of Hartford, and the Hartford Country Club.
