Asylum Hill is a neighborhood in Hartford, Connecticut, part of theĀ 06105 zip code. The boundaries of the neighborhood are Interstate 84 on the south, Albany Avenue to the north, Park River to the west, and Homestead Avenue and Walnut Street on the east. The area gets its name from the Asylum for the Education of Deaf and Dumb Persons, which became the American School for the Deaf and isĀ located within the neighborhood. This is largely a residential community and the variety of residences include old mansions, multi-family homes, apartments, and condos. The community has sidewalks, and public transportation is available.
Hartford is known as the Insurance Capital of the World, and this neighborhood is the home to some of the largest insurance companies, including Aetna.
Samuel Clemens, popularly known as the writer Mark Twain, made his home in Hartford from 1874 to 1891. Today, the Mark Twain House is one of the most popular places to visit in Hartford. During the time he lived here, this area was known as Nooks Farm. Harriet Beecher Stowe lived next door, and together they brought notoriety to this neighborhood.
Asylum Hill residents enjoy visiting Sigourney Square Park. This park is noted for its green space and has a spray pool, basketball courts, and a playground. St. Francis Hospital, a comprehensive Catholic medical center, is located in the neighborhood. The Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute is part of this center.
Asylum Hill Congregational Church, which Mark Twain attended, was designed by renowned Irish-American architect Patrick Keely. He designed more churches than any other architect in America.
St. Joseph Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford, is also located within the community.
