The Spanish settled Santa Monica around 1769. And while there are some discrepancies as to how Santa Monica was named, the common theory is that Father Juan Crespi was reminded of Saint Monica’s tears over her son’s (Saint Augustine) early impiety when he saw two springs – today’s Serra Springs. Today, the springs are a California Historical Landmark and are located on the campus of University High School in Los Angeles.

After finding your Santa Monica apartment, you’ll be able to shop along the Third Street Promenade! This famous, upscale shopping area is considered one of the best shopping and dining districts in the Los Angeles area. It is also the location of the country’s oldest and largest organic farmer’s market.

You’ll also be able to stroll along the Santa Monica Pier and visit such sites as the Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This National Historic Landmark was built in 1916 to hold a carousel. Pacific Park is also located on the pier, offering midway games, shops, and rides. There’s no entrance fee, but there are fees to ride the attractions. The Santa Monica Pier is a major California landmark, built in 1909.
