The Serra Highlands neighborhood of South San Francisco is named for Father Serra, the Spanish missionary who founded the California Mission chain. A tidy suburban neighborhood of single-family homes, Serra Highlands sits in a gently sloping hillside location just east of the I-280, the Junipero Serra Freeway.
Junipero Serra Boulevard forms the western boundary of the neighborhood. Alta Mesa Drive and El Campo Drive are the southwest boundaries, Del Monte Avenue is the northeast boundary, and Romney Drive and Serra Drive are the northwest boundaries. Serra Highlands’ zip code is 94080.
Most homes in the neighborhood are one or two story ranch homes. Although most were built in a straightforward style during the 1950s, many area homeowners have remodeled and upgraded their homes since then. Few street trees grow in the well-tended front yards, but some yards are elaborately landscaped. Many homes have striking views of nearby San Bruno Mountain.
San Bruno Mountain State Park offers both hiking and a haven for endangered butterflies and rare plants. For strollers, the South San Francisco bay shore is laced with walking and cycling paths, and a marina is at Oyster Point. Several beaches are within five miles of Serra Highlands too. Private California Golf Club is just south of the neighborhood.
Just to the north is Serramonte Mall. Stonestown Mall is just a little further away, near the southern border of San Francisco. Ample shopping and restaurants are also available on El Camino Real, a half-mile away, and in quaint downtown South San Francisco, centered on Grand Avenue.
The Serra Highlands neighborhood offers very convenient commutes both up I-280 to San Francisco and down 380 to the San Francisco International Airport. The South San Francisco BART subway station is less than a half mile away as well.
