As a result of its foothills location, the neighborhood of Rock Canyon in eastern San Jose is known for its scenic views. Its tranquil atmosphere has a decidedly rural feel. Homes in the Rock Canyon neighborhood are distinctly upscale in nature with outstanding attractions. Most are spacious, many are two-storied with large plots of land. The area is dominated by single-family homes.
Residents of Rock Canyon enjoy one of the most natural settings in the area, at the doorstep of Alum Rock Park. Named for the giant dusty white boulder near the park’s entrance once thought to be aluminum, the park was the first to be formed from the foothills of the Diablo Mountain Range in 1972. While the park offers residents family-friendly facilities such as playground equipment for children, picnic areas (some covered), volleyball sand pits, and barbecue grills, the park is best known for its challenging trails.
With 13 miles of trail, Alum Rock Park offers visitors and Rock Canyon residents a range of hiking options. Some areas are relatively flat near Penitencia Creek, but many more offer challenging climbs with views of the Santa Clara Valley as a reward. Trails within the park also connect to the larger, multi-use Bay Area Ridge Trail, some 500 miles or more of trail that encircles the San Francisco Bay Area along mountain ridges in the area.
Rock Canyon residents are close to shopping and entertainment at San Jose’s Eastridge Center. Originally opened in 1971, this shopping mall underwent a significant renovation in 2005 and offers not only a mall with movie theater, but also new stores outside the mall that share parking.
Another area family fun spot is Raging Waters, an amusement park located at Lake Cunningham Park and adjacent to the Capitol Expressway and Eastridge Center.
