For those intent on living in the Daly City area of San Francisco, Hillside is particularly appealing. It stretches from the center of Daly City at the corner of El Camino Real and Hillside Boulevard on the north to the edge of the Japanese Cemetery at Olivet Memorial Park on the corner of Hillside Boulevard and Hoffman Street on the south. The community is bordered by El Camino Real on the west and San Bruno Mountain State Park on the east.
Shopping is extraordinary in Hillside, simply because the entire neighborhood is next to downtown Daly City. The Market Place Shopping Center is in the center of the neighborhood, while excellent shopping centers of various sizes are available throughout the area to the north or south on Interstate 280, the Junipero Serra Freeway.
Schools are also excellent in Hillside. Jefferson High School is renowned for its academic achievements. Hilldale Elementary School and John F Kennedy Elementary School are also excellent schools within walking distance.
Where Hillside truly shines is its 360-degree access to parkland. Even when ignoring the somewhat normal-sized Hillside Park in the center of the neighborhood, Merced Park is five times the average park size and is only a single block to the west of Hillside. However, this is nothing when compared to the San Bruno Mountain State Park, which is a two thousand three hundred acre range containing the San Bruno Mountain and its four mile long ridge.
Trails throughout the park allow Hillside residents to enjoy the great outdoors right next door, yet still be in the center of Silicon valley. Residents can go just for the fun of walking, riding, skating, or jogging, or they may choose to be on the lookout for some of the endangered species that exist in the park. The San Bruno Elfin Butterfly only appears here, as does the San Bruno Mountain Manzanita flower.
