The Garden Alameda neighborhood is part of the historic Shasta Hanchett Park area of San Jose. Located just west of downtown, Garden Alameda is a unique combination of older residences and newer commercial buildings. Built on lands that were once part of Mission Santa Clara, the area now consists of tree-shaded streets and well-kept homes, many of which were constructed in the early 1900s.
Garden Alameda is in close proximity to many of the amenities of downtown San Jose, including the Mineta San Jose International Airport and the Caltrain transit system. The neighborhood is adjacent to the HP Pavilion, an indoor arena that’s home to the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League. The Pavilion hosts an average of 190 events per year, including musical and entertainment acts, as well as sporting events. The San Jose Market Center, a major retail destination, is located just to the east of Garden Alameda.
Garden Alameda is bounded on the west and south by The Alameda, a historic street that was built on a portion of El Camino Real (or “King’s Highway”), the first road in California. The northern and eastern boundaries of Garden Alameda are West Taylor Avenue and Stockton Avenue. Both the Nimitz Freeway (Interstate 880) and the Bayshore Freeway (Interstate 101) are easily accessible from the Garden Alameda area, providing travel routes to the Eastbay and the San Francisco Peninsula.
Parks near the Garden Alameda area include Guadalupe River Park, located less than a mile to the east. Guadalupe River Park provides three miles of parks and trails along the banks of the Guadalupe River. To the west of Garden Alameda is the Municipal Rose Garden, which is known for its quiet, peaceful atmosphere and more than 180 varieties of roses. Not far from the Municipal Rose Garden is the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, where the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in Western North America is on display.
